Kunle got stronger everyday. It was not long before the game would be up. Two more weeks had passed and I had received two visitors during that time. One was Amaka and the other was my boss. Fortunately neither Amaka or my boss had stayed long and Kunle had been asleep at the time. Although my boss's visit again early this morning had agitated me. She had dropped off a little piece of work I needed to complete. I had decided to give Kunle an early dinner so I could get it done. There was still no light. Kunle sat on the sofa facing the TV and I placed his tray in-front of him. Beep. That was the fridge, then the t.v blinked and came on. Six O’clock News……light was back. Had to make the most of it so strolled to the room to get my labtop. As I came back into the sitting room, there was Kunle. The words from the t.v hit me. NEWS FLASH! Slow motion. The words were resounding and bouncing off my head. Kunle had stopped eating. He was transfixed. ‘Has been missing for just under a month’, ‘no corpse has been found and no reports made to the police’. ‘If any one knows the whereabouts of this man....……Kunle’s picture remained on the screen. ‘Please contact this number’. I was rooted to the spot. 'Switch it off', my mind told me. ‘Too late!’ It said.
I glanced sideways at Kunle. His hands rose slowly to his head, cradling it. ‘My head’, he moaned….’Shade….MY HEAD HURTS’, he said louder. ‘AAargh….’, he sounded like he was grunting. I remained glued to the spot. ‘Shade….it’s me….sSSHADEee……h…h…..h e l p …m e…sshade’. Meanwhile………..
Unknown to me the check my boss had made as a donation towards my bill had not cleared and so had been sent back to her. She had received the evelope when she got to work but had not opened it till much later. It had been a small thing about where she signed the date. She had changed it and taken it back to the hospital herself. The hospital had told her that I had not been their only patient and had told her about Kunle. She remembered the check Kunle donated. She remembered how agitated I had been when she had come to visit. She remembered I had lied to her about being the only one at the hospital. Unfortunately for me she also remembered the NEWS FLASH that had been running for the past three weeks. Kunle had a wife. She said nothing to the doctor. When she left she picked up The Guardian and checked the adverts. That was the number.
‘Hello!.....Hello!......I’m calling in regards to one Mr Kunle Afolayan-Kujo’, Mrs Abake said anxiously. ‘Yes! The voice at the other end sounded eager. ‘I have information regarding Mr Afolayan-Kujo. What happened after the call is speculative. Just at the point where Kunle’s head was hurting badly……there was a loud knock on my door, startling me. I panicked. No one could come in here with Kunle grunting like this but that thought was solved within the next second as my door opened and in came an entourage. I started having that same whizzing attack. I can’t breath. I leaned against the sofa, one hand on my chest. I tried to breath but it only got worse as five police men walked in with my boss, Mrs Abake, another lady I did not know and ….oh my God……if the devil was a woman he would be her……it was Cynthia!
